New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL) is crucial to many Deaf people's ability to learn, communicate and participate in society. The language is vital to the expression of Deaf culture and identity.

Here in Gisborne, we require support from someone who knows some, or is interested in learning NZSL. We have several people in our community who use NZSL and require support. Many of our Deaf community attend 'Care and Craft' every Tuesday morning 9am - 1pm. By attending, you can build up relationships, support the craft activities on the day, and learn/refine your NZSL from those in attendance.

Once a month a representative from Deaf Aotearoa visits - but the community requires support throughout the rest of the month. We need someone who can advocate to our Deaf community members. For example; ensuring they have have timely medical appointments, transport, supermarket visits.

If you're interested in learning NZSL visit: https://www.teachsign.org.nz/ for more information. Many courses can be done online in your own time. We currently have another volunteer who is learning NZSL online and practicing at Care and Craft on Tuesdays so it's a great opportunity to buddy up with them.
